There's a lot going on in Saratoga Springs. One of the earlier events was the Battle of Saratoga hailed as the turning point of the Revolution because it halted the British advance from Canada, preventing them from reaching NY City and splitting the colonies. Admittedly, the battle took place next door in Schuylerville where the monument shown above provides a statue of General Schuyler a view over his home to the Hudson River.

The 19th century brought canals and development. The original Erie Canal, finished in 1825, a mere 22 years after the Louisiana Purchase addded the center of the continent to the fledgling United States, connected Buffalo with Troy, from which one could get to NY City. This transformed Buffalo into a major center of commerce and made NY City the pre-eminent seaport of the United States. The NY canal website shows all the canals and the Champlain Canal website details our very own connection from Troy up to Lake Champlain via a bit of Washington County. Nowadays the canals are more for recreational boating, but even landlubbers can appreciate picnics at the locks.
Buffalo and NYC were not the only places to benefit from the increased transportation, but the railroads in the latter half of the 19th century brought tourists to casinos and spas at the hot springs. Today, the casinos are gone, but the spas and horseracing live on. Downtown has been remodeled, but not updated. There are lots of shops and restaurants. Some of these photos and many more can be found on the Chamber of Commerce website which is a good place to start looking for information. The Convention and Tourism Bureau is another good spot.

The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, on the outskirts of Saratoga Springs, features the Philadelphia Symnphony and the New York City Ballet, but offers much more. Skidmore College (right) is in downtown Saratoga Springs.

Roadhouse 29 is in Grangerville, on route 29 heading east, just outside of Saratoga Springs. Back before fast food chains dominated the landscape, America's highways were full of places like Roadhouse 29. They were real, local, highly personal establishments that created a genuine sense of place and community. Roadhouse 29 rekindles that tradition. We serve great simple food and classic cocktails in a relaxed setting that encourages guests to enjoy the evening.
On Caroline, just two blocks east of Broadway is Sperry's, open for lunch and dinner. Lots of good sandwiches for lunch and a more selections for dinner, good wine by the glass, great beers, and a pleasant patio out back. (518) 584 9618
A bit further south on Broadway (almost to Malta) is Morissey's, open for lunch and dinner. Have corn-meal crusted calimari with a Cajun remoulade as an appetizer, try a tasty pizza from the wood-fired oven, or dig further into the extensive menu. Ample parking. (518) 584 8200
