Fort Ticonderoga(518) 585 2821 |
This is where Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, and his Green Mountain boys snuck up on the British and took over the fort that commanded the portages from Lake Champlain south. Before the Northway was built, travelling by water up the St Lawrence and then to Lake Champlain was the major approach to the heart of NY state from the north. Yes, this is the same Benedict Arnold credited with creating the US Navy (on a fleet of rafts in Whitehall, NY) who later betrayed the revolutionaries and joined the British forces. |
